Don’t know if lifting weights is the right workout for you? Worried that you’ll end up like those meathead guys that strut around the gym in extra-small tank tops? Girls, are you worried you’ll look too masculine if you lift weights? Don’t be. Weight training is one of the best things you can to for your health.
Your body is a machine. The best way to keep it in working order is to keep it working. And your desk job won’t quite do no matter how much work you do there. You need to lift heavy objects and sweat a little to maintain a healthy body.
The benefits of weight training are:
1- It builds strength. As you age your body’s muscles gradually lose their strength. To maintain the strength you have, you have to use the muscles regularly to reduce any atrophying.
2- It solidifies your bones. To prevent osteoporosis, your bones require some resistance. That resistance can come from either of two ways: weight training or obesity. Take your pick– but before you settle on obesity, consider the next six reasons to choose the weights.
3- It improves your overall health and fitness. Weight training gets your heart going, keeps your lungs pumping, and can help prevent cancer.
4- It helps you focus. Lifting weights and other exercises get chemicals going in our brains. These chemicals not only help us relax and calm down, they can also hone your mental acuity.
5- It straightens your posture. Working with weights strengthens your core and back muscles. This will make it easier for you to maintain good posture. This, in turn, will help prevent or reverse back pain and it also helps you feel and look more confident.
6- It prevents injury. Strengthening your muscles also helps strengthen your balance. Your active body is less likely to sustain serious injury from minor accidents if you’re keeping it in shape.
7- It builds self confidence. The taller you’re standing, the leaner you’re looking, the better you’re breathing and the better your heart is circulating, the better you’ll feel about yourself. You know you’re doing something good for yourself, and your body will thank you for it.
8- It’s fun! Sitting on a bench and lifting heavy things can help you relieve stress and feel accomplished and better rounded as a person. It’s also a chance to hang out and meet new people who are also taking charge of their lives.
